Rich mouthfeel, sherry backing, notes of toffee, dark chocolate, prunes
Review by Steve Kirwan
PRODUCT DETAILS:
- Product Name: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey
- Description: Single Malt Irish Whiskey
- Price: $25
- Producer: Unspecified (Bushmills???)
- Parent Company: Proximo Spirits
- Additional Information: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey a 40% ABV gem made from 100% malted barley. Distributed in the USA by Proximo Spirits, a division of Cuervo, who is the parent company of Bushmills. Although neither the website nor the bottle list the distillery, its “triple filtered” nature combined with distinctive sherry notes makes Bushmills the most likely source. It’s a terrific Irish whiskey (especially straight) and a steal at $25 USD. It’s a cool-looking bottle, too!
REVIEW:
- Rating*: 4
- Nose: Creamy malt and soft sherry aromas lead, with a spicy richness hinting of freshly baked pastries, glazed walnuts, marzipan, fresh peaches, and a hint of dried apricot.
- Palate: The full and rich mouthfeel leads to more sherry backing, with notes of toffee, dark chocolate, and prunes. There are also hints of candied citrus and honeyed sweetness.
- Finish: In the end, there is a pronounced nutty and spicy oakiness with notes of bitter-chocolate-covered dried fruit, spun honey, and of course, sherry. Although more refined than most NAS bottlings, the flavors are anything but subtle and the finish is long and warm. There is a noticeable balance between sweet and bitter.
- You might also like: Slane Irish Whisky (not so much in taste, but in uniqueness and intensity of flavors)
