Complex layers of leather, iodine, peat over fruit, and sweet maltiness
Review by Steve Kirwan
- Product Name: Laphroaig 10
- Description: Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
- Price: $30 (Costco)
- Producer: Laphroaig Distillery
- Parent Company: Beam Suntory
- Additional Information: One of my favorites! Laphroaig 10 is a whisky that you will likely either love or hate. Although it exhibits extensive Islay character, it also has a silky sweet backbone that accentuates the leather, salt, and citrus notes. Laphroaig is not usually considered a Scotch for novices but does make a great introduction to Islays. And if you already like Islay Scotch, you’ll appreciate this Laphroaig expression!
REVIEW:
- Rating*: 4
- Nose: Intensely medicinal and leathery with notes of cold campfire and sea-air. Hints of licorice, savory herbal spices, citrus, stewed fruits, and honey. A complex aroma that explodes as it warms.
- Palate: Full-bodied, with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Medicinal, but not overpowering. Distinct islay flavors- fresh peat, leather, tobacco, rope, doused-fire, and a touch of iodine, all nicely countered by the fruity-sweet underpinnings. Well balanced with a clean maltiness, slight saltiness, but no faultiness (see what I did there!).
- Finish: A long, satisfying finish that’s warm with heavy leather and cold-wood fire after-notes. Alternating salt and sweetness, followed by the dreamy afterglow of leather, toffee, and distant smoke.
